このエズラ・レバント氏は、何と私よりも数歳も若いのだと今日知った。同い年か歳上だと思い込んでいた。
2011年4月から2015年2月13日まで四年間続いた“Sun News Network”が、この頃静かだと思っていたところ、何と「活動停止」になったとのこと。当時の“The Source”という夕方のトーク番組から、停止の三日後にすぐ、この“The Rebel”（反逆者？）というニュース番組を立ち上げたらしい。事情はよくわからないが、それにしてもしたたかというのか、しぶとくあきらめない。根性が座っていて、頼もしい限り。
“Sun”の頃から、本格的なスタジオというよりは、ビルのオフィスの一角をスタジオ仕立てにして、カメラを回して放映するという、コストを極力抑えた格安番組のように思われた。そこに、パイプス先生も比較的頻繁に出演されていた。エズラ・レバント氏の元の番組には、2011年10月24日、2012年2月6日、2012年2月14日、2013年5月22日、2014年7月17日の五回出演されている。そして、装い新たに今回の初登場だ。
初めて番組ビデオを見た頃を思い出すと、何だか懐かしい。訳文を始めた2012年3月頃、この映像を予習がてら見ていて、「え！カナダのテレビにまで出演されているの？」とびっくりし、非常に恐れ入った。英語はついていけるのだが、なぜ、それが問題として取り上げられ、一生懸命に語っているのか、最初は皆目見当がつかなかった。それに、どうもおっかない風貌の方達のように思われて、（パイプス先生がタカ派だというのは（http://d.hatena.ne.jp/itunalily/archive?word=%A5%BF%A5%AB%C7%C9）、こういうことなのか）とも緊張した。
慣れてくれば、現実主義的で、国防や安全問題を前面に出す、随分はっきりした主張だとわかる。とにかく、なりふり構わず、自分でスタジオをセッティングして、あらゆる方法を駆使して、メッセージを一人でも多くの人々に伝えようという意気込みを感じる。（冷戦期の東欧の反共産抵抗運動を思い出す（http://d.hatena.ne.jp/itunalily/20090313）。）
パイプス先生は、二十歳以上も若いレバント氏のことを「彼はいい」と、ツィッターで褒めていらした。

A pity that Ms. Boyko didn’t mention that Daniel Pipes was the son of Richard Pipes, the author of so many outstanding works on Russia and the Soviet Union, including “Russia under the Old Regime” and “The Russian Revolution”. This was one of the best interviews on Worlds Apart ever.
それにしても、けたたましい話し方をする女性司会者。内容もうっとうしいのだけれども、声も話し方も五月蠅い。忍耐力を試すための一種の戦略なのかと思い、パイプス先生にお尋ねすると、「テレビのパーソナリティだと思うけど、よく知らないんだ、彼女のこと」との由。
知らない人に、よくテレビ画面であそこまで話せるものですね！テレビ出演が数限りないパイプス先生のこと、実はメッセージそのものが大切であって、相手が誰かは二の次なのでしょうか。

ユーリ後注：2015年3月25日付の最後の番組（アラビア語で問われ、パイプス先生が英語で答える形式）は、2015年5月13日付のダニエル・パイプス公式ウェブサイトによれば、“Al Hayat”に変更されている。なぜ、二言語を使用するのか、直接お尋ねしたところ、「僕はアラビア語であそこまで話せないから、英語で答えている」とのこと。「でも、アラビア語と英語ではロジックが異なるので、聴いている側は疲れるのでは？」との畳みかけには、特にお返事はなかった。但し、「アラビア語の番組に出演する時には、非常に気をつけて発言している」とおっしゃった。（2015年5月13日記）
