「教皇ベネディクト１６世が２月末に引退へ」

教皇ベネディクト１６世は２月１１日、今月末に教皇職から引退する、と発表した。
発表は、バチカン（ローマ教皇庁）で開かれた福者３人の列聖をめぐる枢機卿会議の席上で、教皇自身がラテン語で宣言した。
バチカン放送（日本語電子版）によると、ベネディクト１６世の発表は次の通り。

親愛なる兄弟の皆さん
わたしがこの枢機卿会議を招集したのは、３人の列福の件だけではなく、教会にとって非常に重要な決断を皆さんにお知らせするためでもあります。
わたしの良心を繰り返し神の御前で確かめた後、わたしの力は、高齢のため、教皇職をよりよく遂行するためにもう適していないという確信を得ました。
この教皇職が、その霊的本質ゆえに、行動と言葉だけでなく、苦しみ、祈りつつ、完成させられるべきであることはよく知っています。
しかしながら、早い変化と、信仰生活に対する大きな問題によって揺れる今日の世界において、聖ペトロの船（教会）を統治し、福音を告げるためには、心身の活力が必要ですが、ここ数ヶ月、自分に託された任務をよりよく遂行するための力がないことが自覚されるほど、その活力が減じてきました。
そのために、この行為の重大さをよく自覚した上で、完全な自由をもって、２００５年４月１９日に枢機卿たちによってわたしの手に託されたローマの司教職、聖ペトロの後継者の位（教皇職）を引退することを宣言します。これによって２０１３年２月２８日２０時より、ローマの教皇座は空位となり、関係者らによって新しい教皇を選出するコンクラーベが召集されます。
親愛なる兄弟の皆さん、すべての愛と仕事をもって教皇職の重みをわたしと共に耐えてくださった皆さんに心から感謝すると共に、すべてのわたしの欠点をどうかお許しください。
今、聖なる教会の世話を、最高の牧者、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストに託し、その聖なる母マリアに、枢機卿たちが新しい教皇を選ぶまで見守ってくださるよう祈りましょう。わたしについては、将来においても、祈りに専念した生活をもって、神の聖なる教会に心から奉仕したいと思います。

コメント１：ヨハネ・パウロ二世のように、難病に冒されつつも寿命を全うするまで任務に留まるのも責任の取り方だが、ベネディクト十六世のように、難題山積みの世界情勢の中、ご自身の力量を客観的に踏まえて、意識の明白なうちに退任するというのも、一つの責任のあり方ではある。

コメント３：マレーシアがヴァチカンと国交樹立できたのは、在任中の一つの成果ではあった（http://d.hatena.ne.jp/itunalily/20110720）。しかし、これとて現ナジブ首相の個人資質と汚職にまみれた政治動向との兼ね合いで、相当の論議を招く樹立であった。しかも、マレーシア担当の教皇使節の決定が、昨年12月の私のマレーシア滞在中でもまだだったことを考えると（http://d.hatena.ne.jp/itunalily2/20130126）（http://d.hatena.ne.jp/itunalily/20130127）、適切な人材に欠けるカトリック教会の弱体化とも取れるのではないか。
コメント４：日本のカトリック教会の司祭や司教を拝見していても、今では（え！）と驚くような稚拙な文字を書く人が司教になっている例があった。「偏見はいけません」ということかもしれないが、一方で「文字は人なり」であり、修養次第で、ある程度以上は向上可能なもの。ということは、あまりにも普遍教会としての連帯を意識し過ぎて、有能な人材が他の分野に流れて行ってしまっているのではないだろうか、ということを示唆する。
コメント５：後任の教皇には、アフリカやラテンアメリカからという下馬評（？）があるようだが、私としてはやはり欧州のれっきとした筋から出ていただきたいと願うものである。世の中には秩序というものがある。人口の大きさや当てにならない当座の人気だけで決定されては困るのが、ローマ教皇なのだ。
コメント６：日本でも、かつてはカトリック教会に有力な人材が一定数、存在していたのだが、徐々に世代交代しつつあるのが現状。例えば、それはどこに反映されているか。私の場合、ベネディクト十六世の『霊的講話集』を2005年から2011年まで本棚に所有しているが、残念ながら、2012年がまだ未発行なのだ。つまり、翻訳者が少ないということの証左でもある。ただし、この講話集をひもとく価値は充分にある。説教を数言語で行ない、世界情勢を敏感に反映した講話および祈りを毎日のように公の前でする必要があり、非常に大変な激務だということがよくわかる。しかも、ツィッターを始めたことによって、昔とは比較にならないほど、仕事量が激増したのだろうということがうかがえる。
