一昨日の9月24日、思いがけずマレーシア教会協議会より一冊の本が「贈呈」として届きました。

何とこの本、その前日にメールでシンガポールの出版社に注文しておいたものだったのです。何たる偶然、にしては出来過ぎ。早速、キャンセルの手続きをしましたが、それにしても、よく私のところへ送ってくださったもの、と感謝しています。覚えていただいているのですね。研究発表を続けていくことでその気持ちに応答しなければと、ますます思います。
しばらく前に、本書の編集をされたGordon Paul Means名誉教授の奥様であるLaurel Means博士が、お舅さん、お姑さんに当たるミーンズ夫妻の書き残した大量の書簡を元に、マラヤ・マレーシアの宣教師としての働きをドキュメンタリー風に綴った本を出版されました（参照：2009年5月14日・5月15日・12月10日付「ユーリの部屋」）。
それを読んで初めて、現在のマレーシア教会協議会の総幹事Rev. Dr. Hermen P. Shastriが、このミーンズ夫妻とどのような関係にあったのかが明らかになりました。そこで、そのことを綴った私からの私信が、無断で（！）マレーシア教会協議会の公式ホームページに掲載されたのです。びっくりしたものの、とりあえず、英語版ブログ第二弾（http://pub.ne.jp/itunalily/?monthly_id=200907）に転写しておきましたので、もしご興味のおありの方がいらっしゃれば、どうぞご覧ください。
訃報です。私は知らなかったのですが、編集をされたGordon Paul Means名誉教授が、昨年夏、病を得て亡くなられていたのでした。故David Kerr教授と同じご病気でした（参照：2008年6月25日・7月12日・10月25日付「ユーリの部屋」）。
Gordon Paul Means
Means, Gordon Paul Passed away Aug. 12 at home, aged 83, peacefully in his sleep, after a short but courageous battle with ALS. Survived by his devoted wife, Laurel; four children, Kristin, Norval (Lalla), Erik (Anne), and Kala; stepchildren, Adrian Braswell, Julia Reiners (Paul), and Eric Braswell; eight grandchildren; his sisters, Virginia Means Rowe, Mariel Means Ames (Ned), and Charlotte Means-Shields (Charles); and many loving nephews and nieces. He was proud of his Navy service during WWII and of his and his parents' dedication to the Sengoi people of Malaysia. An internationally recognized scholar for research and publications in Southeast Asian politics and sociology, and listed among the most outstanding intellectuals of the 21st century, Gordon taught at, among others, the universities of Washington, Iowa, McMaster (Canada), Sumatra, Beijing, Singapore, Malaya, Hamlin, Gustavus Adolphus, and the University of Minnesota's Institute of International Studies. He lived his life to the fullest, enjoying family camping in his little Scamp, canoeing in the Boundary Waters, fast-paced golfing, or competing even faster on the tennis court. He was an active member of Discovery United Methodist Church, Chanhassen. Generous with both knowledge and hands on help, he will long be remembered for his wisdom, humor, and unerring practical sense. The family is grateful for his comforting Hospice care, especially Nurse Marci, and for the concerns and expertise of Dr. David Haugland, Lakeview Clinic. A memorial service in celebration of his remarkable life is planned for mid-September, details to follow, with inurnment at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. マレーシア教会協議会へは、以下のようなお礼状とお悔やみをお送りいたしました。一部のみ引用いたします。原文は英文ですが、自分で拙訳してみました。（余談ですが、自分の書いた英語は、日本語に訳しやすいですが、まず日本語に書いてから英訳するのは、自分の文章でも、とても難しいです。）
「（中略）ミーンズ夫妻のご長男であられたGordon Paul Means名誉教授が2010年8月12日にご逝去されたとの報は、悲しいお知らせでした。私の知る限り、ここ日本におけるマレーシア研究で、最も頻繁に引用されていた研究者のお一人が、Gordon Paul Means名誉教授でした。特に、先生の最後のお仕事となったご著書“Political Islam in Southeast Asia"は、私が2009年10月にマラヤ大学の書籍部で見つけたものですが、マラヤ・マレーシアでの宣教師夫妻のご子息としての先生が、9.11以降、マレーシアのイスラームのまさにその特徴を書かなければならないとなぜ急き立てられたかについての、雄弁な立証となっています。
奥様でいらっしゃるLaurel Means博士のご著書『言葉を超えて』は、未だ私の念頭を離れません。ご連絡をとる機会がおありでしたら、どうぞ心からのお悔やみと同時に感謝の念を、奥さまとご遺族にお伝えくださいますよう、お願い申し上げます。」
