今日の遅い午後、久しぶりに同志社大学へ。直前にメーリングリストで講演紹介を受け取っていたが、メールを見たのが遅過ぎて、申込みには間に合わず。でも、勇んで出掛けて行ったら、何事もなく中に入れた。
ウィリアム・クリストル博士といえば、７万５千部発行の『ウィークリー・スタンダード』誌の編集者として日本でもかねてから有名で、ご経歴が少し似ているダニエル・パイプス先生の古くからの知己でもある。
簡単なご報告をメールで送ると、十数分後にすぐ「彼はとても頭が良くて、役立つ」との好意的評価だった。

クリストル博士のお話は「トランプ大統領時代のアメリカ政治」と題するもので、「予測不能」というのがキーワードだったが、赤いネクタイを締めて、にこやかに、多岐にわたる穏健かつ儀式的なお話に終始された。日本人相手なので、内容があまり鋭くもなく、詳しくもないのが残念だが、若い学生中心に100名ぐらいは出席していただろうか。昨日は東大でもお話されたようだ。
来日経験は過去に何度かあるものの、京都は初めてとの由。ツィッターには、新幹線で東京から京都に向かう途中、富士山が見えたとか、新幹線を「弾丸列車」と呼ぶことに驚いていらした等、今更ながら、あまり日本をご存じではないのかしら、と.....。聞く所によれば、以前の来日はあまり楽しくなかったが、民間はマシらしい。
村田教授がまとめられたコメントでは、「ホワイト・ハウスのセレブ化」の延長にトランプ大統領もあるのではないか、ということだった。また、「アメリカを代表する知識人」であるクリストル博士は‘ネオコン’に属するとのことで、Ｇ・Ｗ・ブッシュ時代にはあたかも危険集団のように思われたが、実は今日のお話のように、バランスの取れた多様な見方をなさる。保守といってもさまざま、リベラルといってもいろいろある、との常識的な締めで終わった。

I’m on the bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto. Needless to say it doesn’t compare to the Acela. No swaying back and forth, no sudden stops, no delays, no loud conversations among Beltway blowhards, no refuse left by previous riders to give one a sense of historical continuity. Sad!

Huge consternation among residents of Kyoto a few minutes ago, when I walked across a small street with no traffic anywhere in sight--against the light! I'm now holed up in my hotel room, hoping darkness made it hard for bystanders to give an accurate description to the police.
